Missing Beyoncé and K-pop Acts So Argentina vs South Africa Needs to Boost Rugby Football Union's Bank Balance

A brief examination at Twickenham Stadium's upcoming events and, alas, again no the pop superstar. No Bills, Bills, Bills for the RFU chief for now. Indeed, the union's goal to host further live performances and in turn pay for its £660m rebuild has faced a temporary hold-up.

An official document, seen by a national publication, reads: “Given the uncertainty about the capacity of train services to cater for the predicted increase in travelers, there remain major worries about the increased load put on the road and rail systems by event goers and whether this need can be satisfactorily managed. This will probably lead to a significant nuisance for local inhabitants.”

It is far from insurmountable but it's hard to find many regular matchgoers who think otherwise.

Simultaneously, a three-hour committee meeting recently to consider the stadium's operational proposal showed that there have been 192 representations against, 13 in favour. A decision is expected soon but the final decision will be conclusive in a procedure that will continue into next year.

Meanwhile, the RFU's situation was perfectly illustrated when a scheduled summer K-pop concert was abruptly transferred to a much smaller though updated London O2.

Clearly the RFU cannot attract the level of performers it requires to best make use of its massive venue given its current facilities and limitations.

Moving to Milton Keynes Seems Quite a Reach

However, the union's resolve to optimize its main property leads us directly to this weekend's match at Twickenham.

It is expected to be an exciting finale to the most exciting Rugby Championship in years, upwards of 70,000 are expected and it is unquestionably a revenue-generating event.

The match is managed by ISI and a seasoned professional, who has years of experience doing similar for the Barbarians side at Twickenham and says, “as with most things it’s usually based on financial considerations. It’s fair to say everyone participating are satisfied with the deal they've agreed.”

Argentina's Home Game

Argentina takes the home role – as was the case when facing Australia in 2016 – and they initiated the move to contact the union.

They are set to earn significantly higher income versus staging the game was held back home, which will be a particularly useful revenue stream considering the absence of the annual tournament in 2026 and logistically it is sensible.

The journey following the previous fixture in South Africa is more forgiving and nearly all of their first-choice players on Saturday play in either England or France.

The Springboks' Position

South Africa are the away side, simply along for the ride, yet this marks the third occasion in three years they compete in a game in London where England isn't playing.

The organization, accordingly, obtains a substantial rental payment plus additional income from concession sales which promise to be in the same ballpark an England international due to the substantial turnout that is projected.

As Sweeney has admitted, the venue represents the organization's financial backbone.

Is it surprising the union is increasingly letting their rivals utilize their facilities if they are willing to pay?

South Africa's Cooperation

South Africa may simply be happy to take part yet it's not accidental this match is considered especially fitting to host in London.

As an expert explained recently, the Springboks operate across continents these days via their professional clubs involved in cross-hemisphere tournaments.

The expat community in the UK drives robust demand and the timing works well for supporters back home.

They travel to London assured that it benefits their goals to enhance their profile worldwide, particularly if they wrap up the title in London impressively.

Future Fixtures and Global Strategy

They are also set to welcome the Kiwis for an extensive competition in 2026, which is planned as a quadrennial, reciprocal tour, and a fourth “neutral” Test is under discussion, probably in Europe, possibly back at Saturday’s venue.

The team could be the away side on Saturday but it's significant when Bongi Mbonambi will match Tom Curry’s tally of successful appearances since the summer of 2023 if South Africa prevail against Argentina.

Meanwhile, the union appears, is only too happy to have them - past controversies such as the unpleasant aftermath from the 2023 World Cup semi-final and Rassie Erasmus’s social-media posts regarding match officials seemingly put to one side.

London as International Hub

Indeed, increasingly it feels Twickenham is being positioned as the northern hemisphere’s premier neutral location.

As Berrick points out, ‘across Britain we embrace global competitions. American football games are staged, Brazil play football matches here, there’s baseball, the nation loves sport”.

It doesn't help develop new territories – one wouldn't attempt to develop cricket fans by staging a match at the historic ground – but occasional visits to Twickenham becomes more logical.
